Advice to prevent car theft from DI Wall

Alert message sent 17/06/2020 16:21:00

Information sent on behalf of Thames Valley Police

Whether your car is keyless or not - now is a good time to think about your car's security and where you're keeping your keys.

Detective Inspector Pete Wall has some advice for you.
Watch his video on our facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=182089323229728 (you don't need to have a facebook account to watch the video.)

If a video isn't for you, you can read his advice below:

"Hello I’m Detective Inspector Pete Wall from High Wycombe police station and today I want to talk to you about car theft.

"We have seen an increase of car thefts in and around the Wycombe area over the last few weeks and so I want to encourage you to think about the security of your car and your car keys.

"There are two forms of car theft that we most commonly see:

"One, is where car keys are stolen from inside the house and then used to take the car from outside. Sometimes criminals force entry to a house to get the keys or get to them through doors and windows that have been left unlocked or insecure, either whilst the owners are out or are just in the garden or another part of the house.
If you require a key to unlock and start your car, please keep them out of sight and away from doors and windows, preferably in a secure place in your home. Please also make sure your doors and windows are closed and locked when you aren’t in a position to keep an eye on them – even if only for a short amount of time.

"The second is the theft of keyless cars. Here, criminals use a piece of equipment to intercept the signal from the key inside the house and use this to start the car and drive away – without needing the key itself.
If you own a keyless car, keep your keys in a metal tin or a signal blocking pouch and keep them away from your front door or side of your house. Where possible, consider using other vehicles to block them in so they can’t be easily driven away.

"Please be reassured that while you review the security of your car, my team are thoroughly investigating crimes that have already been reported to us and following up on intelligence to disrupt those who choose to commit these crimes."
